Let's Talk about Films in Translation | UEA Subtitling and Dubbing Workshop

The University of East Anglia, would like to invite Year 12 and 13 students to a special afternoon exploring the role of subtitling and dubbing in foreign language films.

The School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies would like to invite Year 12 and 13 language and media students to a special workshop to explore what is involved in subtitling and dubbing foreign films and the linguistic and cultural representations they convey. The workshop will involve a mix of short presentation and hands-on activities in small groups.

The event is free to attend but must be pre-booked.

… Opened my eyes to the problems faced by subtitlers and dubbers and also how to do it myself … 
I learned how to use subtitling software, the struggles of translating cultural references into other languages … how difficult it is to link up words to action and mouth movements in dubbing … techniques and terminology … considerations when adapting a piece of media for another audience …
I felt very engaged by the cross-cultural issues activity and the quiz involved was very entertaining … using the subtitling software was fun … all very interesting, very well explained… the people were really fun and engaging … girls and dubbing -  very knowledgeable … natural enthusiasm …
Gave me an idea of what I would potentially like to do at uni, am very interested in giving this a go … enjoyed subbing and dubbing and want to do it as a career …
